Mon Petit Choux Cafe, Nanaimo

|

Roasted Veggie Baguette It's been something over six months since Pamela and I packed up and moved to Vancouver Island. Sometimes it seems like it's been the blink of an eye, but on reflection we've settled into something of a routine, got stuff somewhat unpacked and set up, met some great neighbours, had friends visit, started exploring the surrounding communities.

We've even acquired a puppy, veritably a symbol of domesticity. They're not called canis domesticus for nothing, ya know.

In this time, we've developed a few favourite eating spots, and at the top of my list is Mon Petit Choux (a term of endearment in French, literally 'my little cabbage')

The cafe occupies the wedge between Wharf and Commercial Street (101-120 Commercial Street, Nanaimo, (250) 753-6057), across from the new Library in the old heritage district downtown. The decor is somewhat unprepossessing, featuring a lot of linoleum and padded vinyl benches, but if you manage to get over that and order something from their thoughtful little menu, you will soon be transported by food that is simple, fresh, perfectly prepared and elegantly presented and nicely served. It's down to earth and absolutely delightful, at a price that can't be beat.

I love the roasted vegetable baguette for lunch, and their scrambled eggs (always absolutely light and cooked just au point) with smoked salmon and capers, served with a delicious cake of grated potatoes, golden brown, crispy and delicious are always a special treat for breakfast. The tuna sandwich is also excellent (as are any of the sandwiches, I'm sure). Pamela loves the granola.

Up to now, the café is open for breakfast and lunch only; I'm informed that the owner intends to open for dinner eventually. I'm hoping it will be soon!
